A Lake Champlain Childhood: The Early Years of Grace Coolidge.
Vermont's Queen City of Burlington sets the stage for this story of a remarkable girl who grew up to be First Lady of the nation. Artifiacts and graphics illustrate the life of Grace Anna Goodhue in the years before she met an aspiring young politician named Calvin Coolidge. Selected as an official "Vermont Lake Champlain Quadricentennial Event."

Hands-on activities and period games. Learn about ancient stone tools or how to throw an atlatl, play period games, and enjoy other fun for all ages. Sunday afternoons through the season, 2:00-4:00 PM.

May 16: Pruning for the Home Landscape

Pruning is an art; the difference between a plant that has been cut, hacked, shortened and one that has been pruned for its pleasing contribution to the landscape or garden. A classroom discussion of styles, techniques, and do's and don'ts will be followed by a pruning demonstration on nursery stock and an overview of pruning as an element of design on the Morrill Homestead grounds. May 23 & 24: History Happens at OCH!
History comes alive at Old Constitution House with the first of several programs organized by 18th century re-enactor Carl Malikowski. Carl and his wife Carolyn will demonstrate a variety of period activities including brewing, cooking, woodworking, powder horn carving, and more! 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

May 23 & 24: Open Studio Weekend
Vermont artisans temporarily relocate their studios to the Coolidge State Historic Site as part of this statewide event organized by the Vermont Crafts Council. Featured crafts: basket making with Irene Ames and traditional ornamental techniques (wall stenciling, theorem painting, bronze powder stenciling, etc.) with members of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

June 13: An Evening With Stellafane
Founded in Springfield Vermont in the 1920s, Stellafane is the oldest group of amateurs in the country devoted to building and using telescopes. Moss expert Steven Hoover, a biologist at Castleton State College, leads a walk to discover the mosses found on Mount Independence. What is their habitat, how do they grow, and how do you identify them? Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. 1:00 PM.

June 27-28: Amateur Radio Service Field Days

The Addison County Amateur Radio Association will set up a simulated emergency station, using only emergency power supplies to practice emergency communications without relying on phone systems, internet, or commercial power sources. The public is welcome to watch and ask questions. 2:00 - 8:00 PM Saturday, and 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Sunday

July 4: President Calvin Coolidge Birthday Celebration
Commemorate the birthday of the only president born on Independence Day. At Noon march from the village green to the cemetery where a wreath from the White House is laid at the President's gravesite. A chicken barbecue follows at the Wilder House Restaurant; Okemo Young Artist Program concert at 2:00 PM. The parade is co-sponsored by the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation and the Vermont National Guard.

July 4: Old Time 4th Celebration and Reading of the Declaration of Independence:
Celebrate the Fourth of July with old time fun on the lawn of the Monument with refreshments, colonial music, games and activities for children. In keeping with the annual tradition, the Reading of the Declaration of Independence with local actor Willy Jones will take place at 1:00 PM. Discussion and audience input will follow. The event is free and open to the public. Time: 10:00 AM for the reading.

July 5: The American Withdrawal from the Mount
On July 5 and 6, 1777, American forces withdrew from Mount Independence and Fort Ticonderoga as the British arrived. Commemorate this event with a special musical interpretation by members of the Seth Warner Mount Independence Fife & Drum Coprs at the Fort Ticonderoga/Mount Defiance overlook on the Baldwin Trail. Will we hear an echo from across the lake? Gather at the musuem at 1:30 for the event at 2:00 PM.

July 11 & 12: Battle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment
Commemorate the 232nd anniversary of the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont. Activities for the whole family. Reenactors portray the soldiers who fought here. Tactical military demonstrations, drilling lessons, guided camp and battlefield tours, courts martial, camp life activities, Mistress Davenport's Schoolroom, history scavenger hunt, colonial games, and shopping on sutler's row. Revolutionary War battle maneuvers Sunday morning, followed by a symbolic Revolutionary relay sending battle news to the Old Constitution House in Windsor, Vt. Food stand both days. Call for details. July 12: 1777 Constitution Day Celebration
Join re-enactors, traditional artisans, and costumed guides in this festive tribute to Vermont's first constitution, held where it all began - the tavern now known as The Old Constitution House. The event culminates with "Vermont's Revolutionary Trek" - a symbolic relay from the Hubbardton Battlefield to Windsor's constitutional convention. 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

July 17: Music on the Mount: Seth Warner Mount Independence Fife & Drum Corps
Enjoy Revolutional War era music, dramatic readings, and more with this performance by the Seth Warner Mount Independence Fife & Drum Corps led by Rustan Swenson. Swenson will provide commentary about the music and its uses, both military and civilian. This group is much in demand for parades and programs. 7:00 PM

July 19: "Barn To Be Wild"

In the 19th century it took someone with courage and gallantry to have eight pink barns in the Vermont rural landscape. Spend an afternoon learning about the unique functions of Justin Morrill's Homestead and the agricultural heritage of Vermont barns. July 25 & 26: Soldiers Atop the Mount
This living history weekend honors the American, British, and German occupation of the Mount. Reenactors demonstrate military tactics, artillery, camp life, colonial crafts, cooking, and clothing. After the military tacticals meet and greet the soldiers. Guided camp tours, trail tours, drilling lessons, and children's history scavenger hunt and activities. Saturday afternoon enjoy the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence. Special offering this year-the French and Indian War at Mount Independence. August 15 -16: The Weekend Anniversary Celebration of the Battle of Bennington - Cannons, Soldiers and Ceremonies
A Living History Encampment will take place on the grounds of the Monument. Drill presentations, musket and artillery demonstrations, educational exhibits, and activities for children will be ongoing hourly. Authentic cannons will be on display and fired periodically during the day Saturday and Sunday. The event is free and open to the public.

September 13: Foray for Fungi
Have you ever been on a hike and wondered about the strange colorful varied forms growing on logs and the forest floor? This hike is an introduction to mushroom and other fungi with Skidmore College mycologist Sue Van Hook. She will lead a forest walk to look closely at the biodiversity present in the fungal kingdom. September 18: Atlatl Workshop
Atlatl experts Bob and Cheryll Berg of Thunderbird Atlatl will teach you modern and traditional techniques of atlatl and dart construction, flint knapping, hafting stone points, and cordage making. Enjoy atlatl lore and coaching on the use of your new atlatl. Bob has taught primitive skills and the atlatl for 17 years. September 19: Fourteenth Annual Northeastern Open Atlatl Championship & Chimney Point Knap-In and Festival of Nations

Participate in or watch this annual championship, part of the Festival of Nations with the Crown Point, NY, State Historic Site. The sport of atlatl throwing is based on the ancient hunting technique of using the atlatl or spear thrower. Flint knapping and other Native American life and craft demonstrations. Autumn is the perfect time to hunt for edible mushrooms. Mycologist Faith Hunt will teach which mushrooms can be eaten and which are better left alone on the forest floor. December 12: Coolidge Holiday Open House
Enjoy the traditions of the season in one of Vermont's most picturesque villages. Visit the Coolidge Birthplace, decorated as it would have been in 1872, the year the future president was born. Winter exhibits at the Aldrich House, Plymouth Cheese Factory, and 1924 Summer White House office. Old-time music, craft demonstrations, wagon/sleigh rides, lunch at the Wilder House Restaurant, special cancellation at the historic Plymouth post office, and children's holiday activities. 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
