April 27,May 4 & May 11:Rethinking Your Backyard:Creating Outdoor Spaces
Join Janet Cavanagh, Landscape Architect, for a 3-part series on how to design your own garden. You will learn how to make a plan, analyze your site and determine your landscape needs.  With a few design principals, you will be able to determine the arrangement of features such as terraces, walls, structures and planting beds which will shape your outdoor space. Whether your style is formal or naturalistic, you will learn to conceptualize your vision, enhance the natural features of your land, and begin to select the right plant for the right place for both beauty and food. Janet has spent 25 years designing gardens for clients all over New England. Classes will meet evenings from 7-8:30 PM at the Education Center. Cost:  $75.00 for 3 sessions. May 1: Pruning for the Home Landscape 
Pruning is an art; learn the difference between a plant that has been cut, hacked or, shortened and one that has been pruned for its pleasing contribution to the landscape or garden.  A classroom discussion of styles, techniques, and do’s and don’ts will be followed by a pruning demonstration on nursery stock and an overview of pruning as an element of design on the Morrill Homestead grounds.  Led by Michael Dathe, horticulturist & designer with 35 years experience in his informal/natural New England style. . May 29 & 30:  History Happens at OCH! 
History comes alive at Old Constitution House with the first of several programs organized by 18th century reenactor Carl Malikowski.  Carl and his wife Carolyn demonstrate a variety of period activities including brewing, cooking, woodworking, powder horn carving, and more.

May 29 & 30:  Open Studio Weekend. 
Several Vermont artisans temporarily relocate their studios to the Coolidge State Historic Site as part of this statewide event organized by the Vermont Crafts Council.   Featured crafts:  basket making with Irene Ames and traditional ornamental techniques (wall stenciling, theorem painting, bronze powder stenciling, etc.) with members of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration.

May 31: Memorial Day Remembrance

June 5: Climb of your Life

Historian Vincent Feeney talks about Matthew Lyon, indentured servant, Green Mountain Boy, son-in-law to Thomas Chittenden, land speculator, entrepreneur, and Vermont congressman. Lyon served at Mount Independence and in 1785 bought its abandoned cannons and other scrap iron.  Sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council.  1:00 PM

June 12:  Staying Connected: Wildlife Habitat
Monica Erhart, Linkage Coordinator for Staying Connected, talks about Vermont’s critical wildlife corridors and their importance for wide-ranging mammals.  Hubbardton is in the center of an important corridor between the Green Mountains and Adirondacks.   Afterwards enjoy a wildlife-focused walk if weather allows.  1:00 PM

June 20: Rustic Furniture Workshop
In these one-day workshops at the Morrill Homestead you will take saplings and with simple joining techniques make an outdoor trellis or piece of furniture. They may be as simple or as intricate as you choose and time allows. June 20 – September 19:  Battlefield Third Sundays
On June 20, July 18, August 15, and September 19, a Hubbardton resident from 1777 (dressed in period attire) comes back to life to talk with visitors about the battle, living in the path of the American Revolution, and everyday life.  Rain or shine.  1:00 PM

June 25-27:  Amateur Radio Field Day Weekend     
The SB Electronics Amateur Radio Club will set up a simulated emergency station, using emergency power supplies to practice emergency communications without relying on phone systems, internet, or commercial power sources, as part of amateur radio field days across the United States.  The public is welcome.  Friday Noon-5:30 PM, Sat. & Sun. 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM

July 4:  President Calvin Coolidge Birthday Celebration. 
Commemorate the birthday of the only president born on Independence Day.  At 12:00 Noon, march from the village green to the cemetery where a wreath from the White House is laid at the President’s gravesite.  A chicken barbecue follows at the Wilder House Restaurant.  The parade is co-sponsored by the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation and the Vermont National Guard.

July 4: Celebration and Reading of the Declaration of Independence:
Celebrate the Fourth of July with old time fun on the lawn of the Monument; games and activities for children.  In keeping with the annual tradition, the Reading of the Declaration of Independence by local actor Willy Jones will take place at 1:00 PM.  Discussion and audience input will follow.   The event is free and open to the public.    10:00 AM –11:00 AM for the reading.

July 10: 1777 Constitution Day Celebration 
Join re-enactors, traditional artisans, and costumed guides in this festive tribute to Vermont’s first constitution, held where it all began – the tavern now known as Old Constitution House.  The event culminates with “Vermont’s Revolutionary Trek” – a symbolic relay from Hubbardton Battlefield to Windsor’s constitutional convention.  11:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

July 10 and 11:
Battle of Hubbardton Revolutionary War Encampment
Commemorate the 233rd anniversary of the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont.  Activities for all ages and for the whole family.  Reenactors portray the soldiers who fought here.  Tactical military demonstrations, drilling lessons, guided camp and battlefield tours, courts martial, camp life activities, Mistress Davenport’s Schoolroom, history scavenger hunt, colonial games, and shopping on sutler’s row. Revolutionary War battle maneuvers Sunday morning, followed by a symbolic Revolutionary relay sending battle news to the Old Constitution House in Windsor, Vt.  Food stand both days.  Call for details.

July 11: Picturesque Tea and Tours
Come to the homestead for a lovely tea hosted by the Friends of the Morrill Homestead and Debbie Blanchard. July 24 & 25: Soldiers Atop the Mount
This living history weekend honors the American, British, and German occupation of the Mount. Reenactors demonstrate military tactics, artillery, camp life, colonial crafts, cooking, and clothing.  After military tacticals meet and greet the soldiers.  Guided camp tours, trail tours, drilling lessons, and children’s history scavenger hunt and activities.  Saturday afternoon enjoy the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence and music by the Seth Warner Mount Independence Fife & Drum Corps.  Call for details.  9:30 AM. – 5:30 PM   (admission $6.00 for adults, free for children under 14)

August 7:  Plymouth Old Home Day. 
First popular during the early years of the 20th century, Plymouth Old Home Day in 2010 promises to be bigger and better than ever.  Join Governor Jim Douglas and other dignitaries to celebrate the grand opening of the new President Calvin Coolidge Museum & Education Center.  Activities include wagon rides, chicken barbecue, sheep shearing, old time fiddling, traditional Vermont craft demonstrations, and children’s activities.  l0:00 AM – 4:00 PM.

August 14–15: Weekend Anniversary Celebration of the Battle of Bennington
Cannons, Soldiers and Ceremonies
A Living History Encampment will take place on the grounds of the Monument.  Drill presentations, musket and artillery demonstrations, educational exhibits, and activities for children will be ongoing hourly.  Authentic cannons will be on display and fired periodically during the weekend. The event is free and open to the Public.

September 4:  An Inquiry into the Revolutionary Mind:  What Were You Thinking, Isaac Kendall and Benjamin McCool? 
Site interpreter Paul Andriscin turns back the time machine and interviews two American soldiers, Isaac Kendall and Benjamin McCool, about their service and experience during the American Revolution at Mount Independence.  2:00 PM

September 4 & 5:  The Plymouth Folk & Blues Concerts.  
Stars from Vermont and nationally knownmusicians team up for a lively two-day festival of folk and blues music performed in the pure country air of historic Plymouth Notch.  Organized by Jay Ottaway and the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation.   Children’s concert and songwriting workshop both days.  The concerts are free; donation is suggested.  2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.  For more details, see the website: www.plymouthfolk.com

September 17:  Atlatl Workshop
Atlatl experts Bob and Cheryll Berg of Thunderbird Atlatl will teach you modern and traditional techniques of atlatl and dart construction, flint knapping, hafting stone points, and cordage making.  Enjoy atlatl lore and coaching on the use of your new atlatl.  Bob has taught primitive skills and the atlatl for 17 years.  This is his 15th year at this event.  $65 fee includes instruction and all materials.  Pre-registration required.  Vermont Archaeology Month program.

September 18:  Fifteenth Annual Northeastern Open Atlatl Championship Festival of Nations 
Participate in or watch this annual championship, part of the Festival of Nations with the Crown Point, NY, State Historic Site.  The sport of atlatl throwing is based on the ancient hunting technique of using the atlatl or spear thrower.  Demonstrations and workshops on flint knapping, and Native American life and crafts.  Co-sponsored by Vermont Archaeological Society.  Vermont Archeology Month program.    10:30 – 4:30 PM

Celebrate the bounties of the harvest and the award-winning world of Vermont-made cheese!  Cheese sampling by members of the Vermont Cheese Council and guided tours of the Plymouth Cheese Factory; wagon rides, historic farm & craft demonstrations, cheese recipe contest, barbecue, and other activities for the entire family.  Helene Lang performs as Beatrix Potter at 2:00 PM (sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council.)  10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

September 24:  An evening of History with Humor and the chance to meet the most hated Briton of the Revolutionary War
Howard Burnham, known for his witty and informative first person characterizations of well know historical figures, will give an outstanding performance portraying Old Banastre Tarleton, the infamous commander of the Green Dragoons, in his extreme old age, composing a memoir of his colorful and eventful life.  $5.00 Adult Admission children under 12 are free.  7:30 PM  at the  Old First Church Barn on Monument Circle.

September 25:  “Liberty Now Has a New Country”—The Marquis de Lafayette
British actor and playwright Howard Burnham performs!  He will transport you to Camden, South Carolina, where on Lafayette’s 1825 tour of the United States the aging Lafayette is laying the foundation stone for the Baron de Kalb Monument.  He reflects on his long and eventful life and eulogizes the Baron, with whom he arrived in 1777 as a young man to fight in the cause of American Liberty.  1:00 PM

October 3: Thirteenth Annual Mount Zion Hike

The series concludes with a “Coolidge Anniversary” program featuring pianist Abigail Charbeneau, violinist Bozena O’Brien, and cellist Matt Laughlin.  An afternoon tea follows at the Wilder House Restaurant.  Donation is suggested.  3:00 PM – 4:30 PM.  This series is made possible through the generous support of the Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation.

The annual celebration of the colorful Ethan Allen will take place about a mile from the Monument at Colgate Farms.  Re-enactors, crafts and food will all be available in a Colonial setting.

October 10: 19th Century Apple and Harvest Festival
Press cider in an antique press, sample cider, taste heirloom apple varieties, meet John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed), play period games, hike the nature trail, play Valley Quest, see traditional craft demonstrations and more.  Rain or shine.  $10.00 Adults,  $3.00 Under 14. 11:00 – 4:00 PM.

October 16:  Sidelined by History:  Seth Warner, Green Mountain Boy
Clifford Mullen, long-time Revolutionary War reenactor from Warner’s regiment, will tell the story of Green Mountain Boy Seth Warner and his military career.  Mullen shares his recent finds from his original archival research on Warner and his men.  Free, donations appreciated.  Doors open at 12:30.  1:00 PM

December 11:  Coolidge Holiday Open House. 
Enjoy the traditions of the season in one of Vermont’s most picturesque villages.  Visit the Coolidge Birthplace, decorated as it would have been in 1872, the year the future president was born.  Winter exhibits at the Aldrich House, Plymouth Cheese Factory, and 1924 Summer White House office.  Old-time music, craft demonstrations, sleigh rides, lunch at the Wilder House Restaurant, special cancellation at the historic Plymouth post office, and children’s holiday activities.  10:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
