Wood for the kitchen, parlor, and sitting room stoves was split and stacked in the woodshed. The kindling wood was also stored here.
Calvin later wrote about how he once forgot to do his daily chore of splitting the kindling for the morning fire. He woke up in the middle of the night because this bothered him. He got up, went out to the shed, and split the kindling.
On the left wall is the box used for smoking hams outdoors. The smoking process involved filling an iron kettle with corn cobs and hanging the hams in the box. The cobs were then ignited, and the hams smoked in the almost airtight box. The hand sled was used to carry wood from across the road.
